Santa Barbara Maison

This single story house will be set on several acres in the mountains above Santa Barbara and was inspired by trips to hillside villages in Provence. Designed with characteristic 4 and 12 sloped terra cotta roof-lines, a Provencal color palatte, French limestone and tile, antique beams, reclaimed terra cotta and wood flooring, all selected to evoke a French country feeling. Shaped to embrace the view, the maison’s entry is an angled “hinge” that disguises a dome ceilinged rotunda for an element of surprise as it leads the visitor to a vaulted great room on the left and the bedroom wing on the right.

The other “hinge” conceals a food pantry and laundry room followed by the vaulted artist’s studio and garage wing. Dry stack stone terraced gardens are planned with olive, fig, mulberry plane, cypress, citrus and strawberry trees, complemented by lavender, rosemary and a vegetable kitchen garden. The pool/spa and formal gardens can be seen from all rooms and enjoyed from the skylit loggia.
