Federal Estate

This 1920’s era Federalist-style home in Brentwood on a large park-like estate with mature trees and generous grounds was completely rebuilt from the foundation up after excessive deterioration was discovered during demolition. Ward redesigned the building while adhering to its spirit by adding a foot in height to the first floor, adding taller windows and French doors to bring in more views of the garden and sky, and updating the floor plans for a better use of space. An elegant semi-circle classical entry porch and deck was added as well as one of Ward’s Signature skylighted loggias. A long Olympic-size pool and a new guest house/garage were thoughtfully placed in the rear garden. Care was taken to recreate and enhance the building’s original details and materials with an emphasis on balance, symmetry and classical orders.

Inspiration & Process

Once the extreme deterioration of the building was discovered, Ward’s clients asked to explore designing a new home for the property which can be seen in the drawings here. However, the decision was made to rebuild the existing home due to its historical significance and nostalgic value to the family. There are many beautiful older homes in Los Angeles that just need a careful touch by an architect knowledgeable in historical architecture to revitalize them for their owners as well as enhance the visual attractiveness of the community in general.
